Meeting Set For Energy Star Griddle Standard
If you use or make double-sided (top platen) griddles, mark your calendars: A stakeholder meeting to discuss the proposed Draft 1 Energy Star specification for the category is set for Wed., Feb. 4, in Orlando, Fla., just prior to The NAFEM Show. The meeting will run 9:30 a.m.- noon in Room S310A in the Orange County Convention Center.

RSVPs by Jan. 23 are requested. To respond, you can contact Rebecca Duff, ICF International, at rduff@icfi.com or phone at 202/862-1266. If you can't make the meeting but would like to discuss the draft, Energy Star reps will be at the show Feb. 5-6.

More information, including the data used to develop the Draft 1 proposal, is posted at www.energystar.gov/productdevelopment (click on New Specifications in Development). Comments and discussion notes from last fall's Energy Star online meeting are also available on the commercial griddle Web page. Stakeholders with questions, concerns or additional comments can contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Rachel Schmeltz via email at schmeltz.rachel@epa.gov or by phone at 202/343-9124. Or you can offer the input to Duff at ICF at the email and phone listed above.

Pizza Fusion Plans Faster Growth
Organic pizza has meant healthy gains and busy store development for fast-growing Pizza Fusion. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., chain began 2008 with only two units, ended the year with 16 locations in eight states, and has big plans for '09.

The chain will mark its third year in business by nearly doubling in size, opening 15 new restaurants and debuting units in five new states.

In addition to Florida, Pizza Fusion has units in Arizona, California, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington. New markets for 2009 include Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina and Virginia.

All Pizza Fusions have made sustainability a priority--building restaurants to LEED specification standards, equipping kitchens with Energy Star-approved units, using hybrid vehicles to deliver food, and buying renewable wind energy certificates. Pizza Fusion has 75 franchise commitments in various stages of development and hopes to open 500 locations in all 50 states over the next five years.
