Int’l. Food Safety Training Lab Opens In Maryland

10/15/2011

Academic, private-sector and government forces have jointly created the world’s first global food-safety training facility.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the University of Maryland’s Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and Waters Corp. have opened the Int’l. Food Safety Training Laboratory in College Park, Md.

The IFSTL will focus on hands-on lab training on detection methods and classroom instruction covering regulatory standards. Scientists from the FDA and USDA, along with university experts, will lead training for up to 200 individuals annually to help support foreign and domestic food producers in meeting requirements, such as the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act.
