International Food Safety Training Lab Opens In Maryland

Academic, private-sector and government forces have jointly created the world’s first global food-safety training facility.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the University of Maryland’s Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, and Waters Corp. opened the International Food Safety Training Laboratory last month in College Park, Md.

The IFSTL will focus on hands-on lab training of detection methods and classroom instruction on regulatory standards. Scientists from the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with university experts, will lead training for up to 200 individuals annually to help support foreign and domestic food producers in meeting requirements, such as the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act.
