Top 100 E&S Manufacturers Posted 6.4% Gain In 2011

The 100 largest U.S. foodservice equipment and supplies manufacturers saw their sales grow 6.4% last year, up from a 3.9% gain in ’10, as the U.S. E&S market bounced back from the Great Foodservice Recession. Combined sales of the 100 companies for ’11 totaled $12.466 billion vs. $11.712 billion in ’10 and almost reached the ’08 high of $12.474 billion. The ranking and analysis were presented July 24 at Foodservice Equipment Reports‘ annual E&S Market Forecast President’s Preview in Rosemont, Ill.

The Top 100 outperformed the E&S industry as a whole, which FER estimates grew 4.7% in ’11 in current dollars. The average gain of the MAFSI Barometer, a gauge of sales for manufacturers’ representatives, also was 4.7%. But the group did not outperform the seven large publicly reporting companies FER monitors. Those companies posted combined sales of 8.3% in ’11.

“Chain-oriented companies continued to lead the market,” FER Publisher Robin Ashton told those attending the meeting. “But even suppliers more oriented toward noncommercial and other ‘spec’ markets saw increases last year.”

The complete FER E&S Market Forecast, including the Top 100 E&S Manufacturers, is available for purchase for $1,295 ($895 for past attendees and purchasers of the forecast). The package concludes with the magazine’s hard-number forecasts of E&S market growth at the manufacturer level for next year and out through ’16. For the first time, FER details individual product category growth in the long-range forecast.
