Wash Your Hands! It’s National Food Safety Month

September brings us National Food Safety Month. Now in its 18th year, NFSM creates a heightened awareness of, and for some newer industry members, an introduction to food safety.

The National Restaurant Association is sharing best practices through free training materials and resources at FoodSafetyMonth. Materials are aimed at foodservice professionals and, new this year, home cooks.

The association’s campaign is themed “Be Safe, Don’t Cross-Contaminate.”

According to new NRA research, virtually all consumers say it’s important to them that restaurants they patronize train employees in food safety. The August survey of 1,015 American adults also found that 81% say they would be more likely to visit a restaurant that trains all its employees in proper food-safety practices.

NFSM highlights components of the NRA’s ServSafe Food Safety program, which has issued more than 5 million certifications.

Other notable research reveals a heightened awareness of food safety. Three-quarters of consumers surveyed asserted they would be more confident in a restaurant that displays food-safety training certificates in public areas. Younger consumers are much more likely to notice certificates than are their 55+ counterparts.

The campaign includes 10-minute training materials broken down into five weekly how-to sessions on preventing cross-contamination. Topics include personal hygiene; hand washing; cleaning and sanitizing; correct storage, preparation and cooking; and how to prevent cross-contact of food allergens.
