Burger King Makes Global Inroads

The Home of the Whopper is growing its global empire. After debuting last year in Brazil, China and Russia—and inking an agreement to open its first store in South Africa this year—Burger King Worldwide is returning to France. The chain hasn’t had a store there since 1997, when it exited the country, citing poor sales.

The chain is teaming with Autogrill Group, a partner of BKW since 1982, to bring the brand to at least two locations there: Marseille Airport and Reims Champagne. The new agreement also will spread new-unit development to Switzerland and Poland; further expansion is expected in Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, and Holland.

Autogrill has approximately 900 outlets in 16 European countries. The Italian company has more than 140 Burger King stores, including104 units in North America, 35 in Europe, and five in Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia.

Burger King operates more than 12,600 locations in 83 countries and territories worldwide.
