SHOW REPORT: Bless Our Fun And Games

Who doesn’t like a party? Even better, who doesn’t like a party with a purpose, especially when that purpose is recognizing extraordinary achievements?

Foodservice Equipment Reports‘ Industry Awards celebration, staged Feb. 8, 2013, at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Fla., during The NAFEM Show, honored 17 organizations and individuals with the magazine’s Management Excellence Awards, Industry Service Awards and Young Lion Awards. More than 400 friends, colleagues, competitors and assorted industry big-wigs and hangers-on were there to toast and cheer on the winners through a presentation ceremony. Hosted by FER Chief Editor Beth Lorenzini and Publisher Robin Ashton, the presentations featured more than one tear-jerking thank you from the recipients, but lasted just a little more than an hour. Which left plenty of time for back-slapping, business card swapping, eating, drinking and dancing.

The diversity and depth of the awards recipients mirrored this complex business. From Subway and its International Purchasing Co-op to the principals of Webb Design, dealers Bargreen-Ellingson and Mobile Fixture, and casual dining chain Cheddars Casual Café to the foodservice staff at Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University, the winners of the magazine’s juried Management Excellence Awards demonstrate that diversity. Running your organization well can entail very different skills and knowledge, given the segment or channel, but the common note in the winners’ “thank yous” was the importance of teamwork and sensitivity to individuals’ abilities, motivations and needs.

The overwhelming theme from the Industry Service and Young Lion Award winners was that getting involved in your company, your association and your industry has remarkable pay-backs that far outweigh the time and energy such involvement entails.

The FER Industry Awards will be presented again in 2015 during The NAFEM Show in Anaheim, Calif.
