California Title 24 Updates Kick In July 1

Updates made a year ago to California’s Title 24 statewide energy standards will go into effect July 1. These Building Energy Efficiency Standards are updated on a three-year cycle, and the 2013 Standards will continue to improve upon the current 2008 version for new construction of, and additions and alterations to, residential and nonresidential buildings. The 2013 Standards haven’t significantly changed since 2008, but there are some new requirements for foodservice design projects and adaptive-lighting and optimal equipment performance.

Title 24 Standards, first enacted in 1978 to create strategies for the state’s energy future, focus on energy efficiency to reduce energy costs, increase reliability and availability of electricity, improve building-occupant comfort and reduce impacts to the environment.

The 2016 Standards, now in pre-rulemaking stages, will go into effect Jan. 1, 2017. Information on this phase is available at 2016 Standards Pre-Rulemaking.

A seminar on Title 24 is scheduled for June 12, at the Energy Innovation Center in San Diego. Registration information is available here or by email at seminars@sdge.com, or call 1/800-644-6133. There is no fee to attend.
