Arby’s Makes Unit Growth A Priority

After recording more than four years of rising same-store sales, Arby’s Restaurant Group is scratching the itch to grow.

The Atlanta-based quick-service chain hasn’t focused on new-store expansion since 2008, but this year it is on pace to add 60 units. Arby’s goal of passing $4 billion in total systemwide sales by the end of 2018 would represent a nearly 25% increase in system sales through a combination of average unit-sales growth and new-unit development.

This year, Arby’s is accelerating new development with its brand-forward “Inspire” restaurant designs. Those new units—already performing above expectations—will be seen further afield than just standard stand-alone sites; they are destined for areas novel to the brand, such as urban locations and strip-mall end caps. Remodeling efforts should help with sales momentum. Arby’s completed 34 remodels in 2014 and is on track to remodel 180 locations this year. The chain reports that remodeled units have generated a 15% sales lift per unit.

Arby’s owns 940 of its 3,300 locations.
