Small Design Marks Comeback Bid For UFood Grill

UFood Grill, the Boston-based, fast-casual chain that closed its two standalone locations in 2012, has debuted a new prototype for a traditional in-line design that the company hopes will relaunch its expansion.

The new prototype, designed by Milwaukee-based Interior Systems and its Studio 500 team, measures about 1,800 sq. ft. but is flexible enough to accommodate larger or smaller spaces in any shape. The design provides dine-in seating for up to 36 guests.

The “fry-free” chain, which offers a menu including grain bowls, wraps and grill tips, filed for bankruptcy in 2012 but retained outlets at Boston’s Logan Int’l. Airport and on military bases, college campuses and other nontraditional locations around the country. UFood Grill’s expansion plans are centered on a new 1,800-sq.-ft. format whose flexible design allows it to fit into a larger, smaller and oddly shaped spaces. The chain hopes to open 100 new locations around the country over the next four years.
