Genghis Grill Picks Up 33 Yum! Stores

Genghis Grill, which grew to 59 units with four grand openings at year’s end, is branching out. An affiliate of The Chalak Group, parent of the Mongolian stir-fry chain, has acquired 33 Yum! Brands franchised restaurants. The KFC, Taco Bell and Long John Silver’s units in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma are now under the ownership of Chalak Mitra Group, and will be operated by current Yum! franchisees Manish Patel and Pushpak Patel, who are also part of TCG.

The Chalak Group, which owns, operates and is the franchisor of the fast-casual Genghis Grill brand, previously teamed up with the Patels to open the duo’s first KFC and Taco Bell locations in Anna, Texas.

"It’s a competitive advantage for us to have Manish and Pushpak operate this division," Al Bhakta, CEO of TCG said of the newly formed partnership. "Being existing operators in the Yum! system, they bring specific skills and experiences to the business. Our goals are the same as an entrepreneur—to create enterprise value by growing and developing the business."

Bhakta and his team will continue to focus on growing Genghis Grill to become a national brand, while the Patels will continue to grow within the Yum! system.
