Will 2017 Match Last Year’s Major Merger & Acquisition Activity?

After a year that saw some of the most significant, mergers, sales and acquisitions activity in nearly two decades, two manufacturer acquisitions kicked off 2017.

On January 1, Imperial Brown, a manufacturer of walk-in refrigerators and freezers, acquired Artic Temp, the Prague, Okla.-based maker of walk-ins. A week later, Carlisle Companies acquired San Jamar, the maker of dispensers for paper towels, tissue, soap and air purification as well as personal and food safety products for commercial and institutional foodservice markets; it will operate as a separate unit within Carlisle FoodService Products, joining other familiar names within this division, including Sparta Brush and Dinex.

The news comes after some big deals in 2016, especially on the dealer/distributor side, but there were some big deals among service agencies and manufacturers, too. The reasons: Valuations were high as the industry has had several good years, borrowed money was cheap and, for a lot of family-run businesses, the generational cycle has been running its course. Getting past three generations is tough. And in most cases, this wasn’t big folks buying little folks, but big folks buying other big folks. The result, particular among dealers, in dramatically increased consolidation.

For the record, here are the 21 deals we’re aware of in 2016, in more or less chronological order.

  • Parts Town acquired Whaley Foodservice Repairs. Then Berkshire Partners (not Berkshire-Hathaway) invested in Parts Town while existing owner Summit Partners maintained significant stake.
