Engineering students from Marquette University got a first-hand look at solving real-world problems at a “hackathon” sponsored by Alto-Shaam and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Nine teams of “hackers” at Alto-Shaam’s corporate headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wis., were given roughly 24 hours to come up with innovative solutions to improve door and hinge systems on the company’s equipment.

“This is a collaborative effort between our engineering and HR departments to foster recruitment, academic relationships, and employee engagement,” says Joseph Scordato, Senior V.P.-Engineering at Alto-Shaam.

Marquette’s engineering students presented their designs, solutions and ideas to Alto-Shaam’s chief engineers, Jon Flick and Josh Wittig; several members of the company’s engineering department volunteered as advisors to the students.
