Retrofitting Pays Off At Huddle House

Huddle House kitchens are still plating burgers and waffles, but refreshed dining rooms and exteriors are bringing in new business for the 400-unit, family-dining chain. The redesigned stores, sporting a more modern look and increased seating, have seen sales rise by at least 15%. The Decatur, Ga., chain says 10% of franchisees have converted to the prototype, which features a signature tower entrance and more vibrant lighting over plush, contemporary seating.

Huddle House is trying to expedite conversions through a $2.5 million incentive program offering a $25,000 cost-offset to the first 100 franchise partners who commit to a remodel by July 31, 2014.

The 24-hour chain has stores in 20 states and expects to add 135 new restaurants by 2017 in the Southeast and Texas. Current targeted growth markets also include Nashville, Oklahoma City and St. Louis.
