EVENTS: Benvenuto To HOST 2013

Flags from 10 new countries will be flying at Host 2013, which runs Friday, Oct. 18, to Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Fieramilano, Rho (Milan), Italy. They represent some of the most important emerging economies—Bahrain, Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Romania, Slovakia, Venezuela and Vietnam—and bring the total number of countries represented to 50.

Host expects more than 1,600 exhibitors, about 950 of whom are equipment manufacturers. They’ll share information with some 1,500 profiled international buyers and more than 120,000 professional visitors from around the world.

The exhibition layout at Host 2013 occupies 12 halls and is grouped into three macro-areas: Professional Catering with special focus on foodservice equipment, especially for bread, pasta and pizza; Bar and Coffee, highlighting equipment for coffee and tea as well as ice cream (especially gelato) and pastry; and Furnishings & Décor.

Host 2013 delivers a comprehensive and extensive educational lineup with events that range from informational workshops and training to cooking demonstrations and tastings.

Show coordinators are partnering with the Foodservice Consultants Society Int’l. (FCSI) to present a series of workshops and seminars about concept development, design, planning and management in hotels, contract catering accounts and restaurants. Topics include advice for maximizing social media tools, finding new business opportunities in new markets, large-scale event organization, the benefits of client/consultant partnerships and sustainability.

HOST and POLI.design (Consorzio del Politecnico di Milano) will share the results of HostThinking, an international contest it conducted to find the most innovative proposals for new hospitality formats, for the biggest improvement of a concept or the creation of a concept that best captures current foodservice trends.

Focusing on both consumers’ and operators’ needs, proposals had to be innovative and contain distinctive elements to make the most of the venue, the foods and beverages served and the service experience.

Throughout the show, Nazionale Italiana Pizzaioli (NIP, the Italian pizza-makers association) will be teaching courses on new work systems for pizzerias. The sessions will range from the technical skills needed to produce new pizza styles, such as those made with water-based doughs, gluten-free flour and kamut flour, and the best means to bake them.

The master pizza makers of NIP, the Record Pizza Men, will attempt to set the Guinness record for the biggest sweet pizza in the world.

Show cooking will, as always, be a huge draw. In a large event space on the show floor, ExtraordinariamenteHost collaborates with Associazione Professionale Cuochi Italiani (APCI, the professional association of Italian chefs) and Reed Gourmet to showcase the cooking skills and expertise of professional chefs. They’ll focus on general cooking, patisserie and ice cream making.
