Fast-Food Foes Fend Off Change In Wisconsin

For those keeping track of American frontiers with skylines still clear of fast-food chain signage, you can add Sister Bay, Wis., to the list. The Door County village known for its quaint ambience and summer residents has long maintained a moratorium on fast-food restaurants. A recent request to open a Subway outlet there rallied a grassroots movement to keep foodservice local. The village board has received a recommendation from a commission studying the issue to adopt an ordinance keeping chain and fast-food restaurants out of town. As the proposal is written now, the ban would allow for exceptions, such as allowing fast-food, drive-in and takeout restaurants to get a conditional use permit. However, such businesses would have to meet a number of requirements which include creating a shop that fits in with other nearby restaurants.
