Huey Magoo’s, a fast-casual, chicken-focused chain, has introduced a freestanding drive-thru prototype that lowers build costs and increases site flexibility when compared with its traditional design.

The prototype measures about 1,850 square feet, plus an outdoor cooler. At 40-feet wide by 50-feet deep, it fits typical half-acre parcels and includes seating for 37 inside and 18 outside, along with a drive-thru lane. In comparison, the brand’s current freestanding design measures about 2,600 square feet with 42 seats. The prototype’s smaller footprint reduces ground-up development costs by about 40%.

“Our goal was to develop a prototype that prioritizes efficiency,” says Melissa McCammack, director of architecture and design at Huey Magoo’s. “By refining the layout and focusing on how guests and team members move through the space, we reduced the overall footprint while maintaining an open and comfortable environment.”

For example, in the kitchen, a compact footprint reduces excess equipment and space without affecting performance. The team organized cooking zones to support speed and consistency, and designed employee movement to minimize steps and improve workflow during peak hours.

In 2025, Huey Magoo’s launched a condensed prototype that focuses on nontraditional spaces, such as airports. The brand aims to rapidly expand nationwide. It has nearly 90 locations across 12 states and plans to surpass 100 open units by yearend.
