Energy Star Program Transfers to DOE

The Department of Energy will take over leadership of the Energy Star program from the Environmental Protection Agency by July 2027.

The agencies posted a full transition plan on August 28. It describes the steps for DOE to take ownership of the trademark, leadership of the program and oversight of core operations. EPA will transition to a supporting role.

In the plan, the agencies state they’re “committed to a successful transition and efficient continuity of operations for the program with minimal disruption to outside stakeholders and continued service to the American public.”

More than 1,500 manufacturers, 1,200 retailers, 840 utilities and $100 billion in private markets depend on Energy Star to save the equivalent of 13% of U.S. electricity use annually.
