Sandwich chain Port of Subs has opened its first U.S. Navy Base location at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

It represents three firsts for the 54-year-old brand: its first location on a U.S. military installation; its first international location; and its first restaurant in partnership with Navy Exchange Service Command. The restaurant will offer freshly sliced sandwiches, salads and wraps to those who live and work on base.

“Opening at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay is a proud moment in our company’s history, and the opportunity to serve this community is an honor,” says Healey Mendicino, president and CEO of Port of Subs, in the Oct. 27 press release. “We are grateful to NEXCOM and base leadership for welcoming our brand and helping bring this opening to life. It is a privilege to serve the men and women who serve our country, and the families who support them.”

This year, other brands such as Freddy’s and Wienerschnitzel also have made military base debuts stateside.
