KFC Goes Ultra-Modern With New South Africa Store

The restaurant ramps up tech and caters to changing customer preferences.

KFC has an eye-catching new high-tech, high-touch design in South Africa that it says sets the tone for future restaurants.

Located in Pinelands, Western Cape, the restaurant aims to make service quicker, easier and seamless with digital menu boards in both lanes of the dual drive-thru—a first for a KFC store in Africa—and self-service kiosks for walk-in customers. The store also has a dedicated window for delivery drivers, interior digital menu boards and connected kitchen technology, which KFC says will ensure the correct amount of stock at all times and provide better quality management.

The design comes as customer preferences continue to change, says the brand. “There is no doubt that the restaurant business as we know it has changed, and as we move into a new era of customer experience, the approach to new restaurants needs to shift too, driven by a shift in preferences and expectations of what brands should be delivering today be it in food, design or experience,” says Thuthuka Nxumalo, COO of KFC Africa, in a press release.

On the exterior, the chicken chain aimed to be “respectful to the existing build” while kicking up its signature brand look with partially slatted walls, finished in dark grey and red.

The location employs 25 team members, with plans to add at least another five, from the local township community Khayelitsha.
