Dairy Queen Unpacks Plans for Puerto Rico

Hot food as well as desserts will be offered at the new restaurants, the first of which will open next year.

San Juan will be home to the first Dairy Queen under a new agreement with Caribbean Creamery.

International Dairy Queen is returning to Puerto Rico, where it last had restaurants more than 20 years ago.

Today, June 30, the company announced a deal with Caribbean Creamery to open 20 DQ Grill & Chill restaurants in Puerto Rico by 2036. The first unit is set to open in San Juan in Q1 of 2027.

“We are pleased to add Puerto Rico as a market for DQ restaurants. This new deal expands our established footprint in the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico,” says Nicolas Boudet, chief operating officer, international, at International Dairy Queen. “We selected Caribbean Creamery as our franchisee based on the strength of their leadership team, their operational expertise and their long-term commitment to the market.”

International Dairy Queen, based in Minneapolis, Minn., is the parent company of American Dairy Queen Corp. and Dairy Queen Canada. Through its subsidiaries, IDQ develops, licenses, and services a system of more than 7,800 DQ restaurants in more than 20 countries.

As part of a three-year plan, Casey’s will continue investing in pizza, chicken wings and other menu items, plus add 400 stores.
