Canada’s Top 200 Chains Grow 3% In 2010

Sales at the top 200 restaurant chains in Canada grew 3% in nominal terms last year, according to a new report by Technomic Inc. and Kostuch Media. While an improvement over ’09, the performance “does reflect an industry still operating in a difficult economic environment,” the release announcing the new research said. Net unit growth for the Top 200 was a very modest 73 units, down from 290 in ’09.

“The industry is continuing to grow,” said Technomic Exec. V.P. Darren Tristano. “But looking at a breakdown within the Top 200 chains, we see that just less than half had positive growth, while 86 of the chains experienced declining sales.”

Tim Hortons continues as Canada’s largest chain followed by McDonald’s and Subway.
