Wendy’s Prototype Includes Open Kitchen, Coffee Roasting

It’s been a busy few months for Wendy’s. After selling Arby’s and announcing its move back to its original Dublin, Ohio, headquarters, the burger chain is testing a new prototype Wendy’s restaurant in nearby Columbus.

The sleek, modern design is one of four building styles Wendy’s will test in a multiyear strategy to refresh and update its image. The Columbus unit boasts clean lines, bright lighting, rich colors and provides customers with a more open view of food prep behind the counter. The design also features five defined seating areas, including booths, two- and high-top tables, and a lounge with fireplace.

The prototype incorporates separate ordering and pick-up stations, and a refrigerated display case for bottled beverages and baked goods. A digital menu board allows for menu updates and nutritional info. Beverage service includes coffee made with fresh-roasted beans and Coca-Cola Freestyle machines that dispense 129 beverage varieties.

The 6,600-unit chain plans to test its trio of other prototypes in the U.S. and Canada. No other details have been announced.
