In Memoriam: Alan Berger

Alan Berger, designer of restaurant kitchens and fabricator of stainless steel, as well as a founder and top executive at Fabricators Int’l., Food Service Concepts and Alliance Food Equipment, died Sept. 28. He was 83.

In 1947, he began his education in the foodservice industry working for Dallas Sheet Metal Works; he later would acquire ownership in the company and form Fabricators Int’l. Berger sold the company to Sunbeam Corp. and spent two years at T.G.I. Friday’s helping set up the chain’s first 45 units. Berger then formed Food Service Concepts. He sold it to investors after 20 years and returned to run the company a year later as Alliance Food Equipment Corp.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; brother, Dick; four children; and six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to The Humane Society, The North Texas Food Bank or The Arthritis Foundation.
