QSRs Establish Footprint In Myanmar

Five years after Myanmar’s military government opened the country to the world, at least two QSR chains have set up business there. In April 2013, South Korean burger chain Lotteria opened in Yangon, the country’s most commercially important city, and announced plans to open 24 more Burmese sites by 2016.

Now KFC has become the first major Western fast-food chain to establish itself, unveiling an outlet in Yangon. The KFC outlet is the product of an agreement between the American chain, part of Yum! Brands’ empire, and Yoma Strategic Holdings, a Singapore-listed company that is focusing on Myanmar.

Yoma is eyeing the country’s growing middle class, telling the Myanmar Times that it plans to open several KFC restaurants in Myanmar before the end of the year.
