Energy Star Releases 2016 Unit Shipment Data

Each year, the Energy Star Program requires its program partners to report certified Energy Star unit shipments in order to evaluate the penetration of Energy Star products and the overall performance of the program. The data for 2016 is now available here on the Energy Star website. It is the 15th consecutive year Energy Star has required the unit shipment data.

The new data shows a wide variety of penetration of Energy Star product in commercial foodservice categories. The penetration of warewashers and refrigerators and freezers is an estimated 69% each, while penetration for griddles is 29%, fryers 26% and hot holding cabinets only 22%. Energy Star penetration for ovens is 59%, for ice machines 57% and for steamers 50%. The penetration numbers of all commercial foodservice equipment categories except steamers rose in 2016 from 2015.

The data has an interesting side benefit: It allows one to estimate to the total unit shipment size of each relevant product category. Archived data for earlier years is available on the site noted above.
