Publisher’s Note: Navigating Host

Italy's huge biennial trade show is well worth the trip, says Randy Hano.

As I write this column, I’m finishing my fourth Host Milano show. Since the show happens every other year like The NAFEM Show, the question begs to be asked, should I take the time, money and energy to hit both?

Both shows have their advantages. The NAFEM Show allows you to completely emerge in the equipment marketplace, making buying decisions for what you need today but also giving you a glimpse of equipment that will often be released a couple of years down the line. Host is like no other trade show I have been to. It’s huge. It has up to 18 immense halls to explore and covers a much wider swath. Need bakery equipment, coffee roasters or heavy equipment? They’re all here at Host. One of Host’s secret sauces is not just getting a complete market view but also seeing the trends and equipment often not currently available in the U.S. but that will clearly soon make its way over.

My tips for navigating Host garnered over the last four shows include the following:

• Plan, plan, plan. A show this large requires smart planning well in advance to get the most out of it.

• Seek out the U.S. manufacturers that are exhibiting. Many are here and have great insights to share.

• Make time for all the exhibit halls. You might not think you’re interested in the gelato or technology halls until you get there and see something that sparks your interest.

• Like The NAFEM Show, wear comfortable shoes!

Finally, when you go, be sure to take advantage of your surroundings. Host Milano has superior food to anything you will find at a U.S. convention center with plenty of seating. Looking for an Aperol Spritz? Host has bars and drink trucks virtually everywhere you look so you can share your stories and make new friends.

So should you also attend Host? For me, the answer is unquestionably yes!
